Enrichment, Spiritual, Moral, Social + Cultural Development (SMSC)

Ofsted February 2024

Pupils are taught about different faiths and visit places of worship… Pupils’ cultural development is well promoted..…Pupils enjoy visits from music and ballet companies. As part of a range of activities inspired by learning about the Windrush generation, pupils entered and won a local art competition linked to this theme. In addition, all pupils take part in a range of extra-curricular clubs every week.

At John Chilton School, we are committed to SMSC and Enrichment to support each pupil’s full potential, future opportunities and access to their community.

We embed this throughout our school culture, curriculum, assemblies, celebrations and special events, with staff and pupils modelling these values.

We are very proud of our enrichment offer that helps our pupils build character, resilience and offers meaningful experiences.

Our bespoke curriculum motivates pupils to imagine, enquire and develop a sense of fascination about themselves and the world around them. We create opportunities for regular reflection on citizenship, diversity, respect, equality and protected characteristics. Pupils are supported to express opinions and explore various topics, including morality, rule of law, democracy and issues surrounding internet use, social media and mobile phones.

We prioritise emotional development and relationship building, helping pupils develop self-knowledge and forge appropriate connections with others.

Through our statutory PSHE, RSHE, RE, ICT and Tutor Time Curriculum we reinforce these vital life skills.

Integral to our curriculum are opportunities for:

  • access to outdoor learning, the natural world and local community
  • enterprise
  • sustainability opportunities
  • Healthy Eating, healthy living, importance of exercise, embedding therapies
  • a specialist programme for Life Skills, Relationships Education, Preparation for Adulthood, Trvel Training and Careers
  • range of functional qualifications and work experience

Our pupils have access to Extended-school opportunities such as After School Club and Summer Club.

Our pupils also access weekly clubs led by different staff to promote engagement in hobbies, social skills and communication.

We work in partnership with other settings, arts groups such as colleges, local businesses and organisations. We always work collaboratively with families.

Our school celebrates diversity through various enrichment activities, including:

  • Visits from artists, musicians and performers from ballet, opera and theatre
  • Cultural celebrations such as Diwali, Lunar New Year, Christmas, Easter and Eid
  • School-wide events including Windrush Event, International Days and LGBTQ+ Awareness Week
  • Talent showcases through JC’s Got Talent, Art Galleries and Musical performances
  • Sports Events
  • School Council
  • Achievement and celebration assemblies

We actively participate in Equality and Diversity awareness campaigns like Mental Health Awareness Week, Show Racism the Red Card, and Anti-Bullying Week. Our commitment to social responsibility extends to supporting various charities, including Children in Need, Jeans for Genes Day and local Food Banks. We have an Equality and Diversity Lead and Champion.

Our School Cluster Peer Review further reinforced this recognition, noting:

“Conversations with staff demonstrate how the strong values manifested by the leadership allow for all members of the school community to be visible and valued.”

The review particularly praised our café facility, noting how it develops “social skills, communication skills, life skills, work skills- it is an authentic experience in which they are learning, linking to ambition to experience the world further.”
