Filtering and Monitoring

Filtering and Monitoring

FILTERING AND MONITORING (see Online Safety Policy for full details):

Is included:

  • in the DSL’s role;
  • in staff training twice a year, including cyber security
  • any risk management plans for vulnerable children;
  • Filtering refers to the technology preventing access to harmful or inappropriate content. At JCS we use LGFL, Home Protect and School Protect
  • Monitoring refers to the practical steps staff take to ensure harmful or inappropriate access is not made. Monitoring can include
    • Physical monitoring by staff in the class
    • Guided Access tool on iPads to prevent pupils moving away from the set activity
    • Monitoring user logs weekly
    • Monitoring individual devices when a concern is raised
  • We make sure that any school devices used away from the school site are also subject to filtering and monitoring procedures.
  • Each year (at least) our designated safeguarding lead, along with our IT team and a governor, review our filtering and monitoring procedures to ensure that they effectively prevent access to harmful or inappropriate content. They also ensure that the systems we have in place to report any difficulties with the system are understood by all staff and reports are effectively managed.
  • All our staff undertake training to understand the risks of poor filtering and monitoring, and know how to share their concerns
  • All our staff have taken part in annual cybersecurity training

Regarding the use of social media and the internet when at home the school:

    • Informs pupils through robust e-safety lessons
    • Holds information evenings for parents/carers and families
    • Sends regular updates home to inform
    • Uses chat sessions to understand what children are accessing and supporting children who make disclosures

The school carries out an annual review of our approach to online safety, supported by an annual risk assessment.

WHEN FILTERING OR MONITORING RAISES A CONCERN

  • Concerns regarding staff will be addressed by the Headteacher with advice from HR and, where necessary, the LADO. Depending on the severity of the concern it could be managed through safeguarding, disciplinary or low-level procedures
  • Concerns regarding pupils will be logged onto My Concern and then managed by the appropriate staff members depending on the severity of the concern. Parents and other agencies are alerted as necessary.
