On Tuesday, the 25th of March, we welcomed parents to John Chilton School for our fifth coffee morning. This included a Workshop on ‘Keeping Children Safe’.

Hoda Ali, Community Outreach Project Manager for Safeguarding, joined our coffee morning, which was an excellent contribution. She collaborated closely to  meet our parents and empower them by providing advice and support on “how parents can keep their child/children safe”.

Parents explored ideas of:

  • Teaching children about their private body parts and that their body belongs to them.
  • Helping the children feel confident about speaking up about any issue that might worry them.
  • Encouraging children to talk to a trusted adult at school and home if they feel upset or worried so they can get help.
  • Finding the right time to hold the conversation, such as: while in the car, during the bedtime routine, or while watching TV together.
  • Weaving safeguarding conversations into day to day life in reassuring ways.

In addition, parents have been encouraged to:

  • Use words and phrases so the child can understand.
  • Listen to their child actively.
  • Ask questions to check their children’s understanding of ‘staying safe’.

At the end of the Workshop, parents got the opportunity for a 1:1 Question & Answer session. The Workshop allowed parents to share ideas and challenges over a cup of coffee
