Pupils across the school celebrated National Poetry Day (held on the first Thursday of October) by exploring poetry in their English lessons.

The theme for 2023’s National Poetry Day was Refuge. Refuge can be defined as ‘place, person or thing that provides shelter or protection’. We emphasised this in lessons to discuss that refuge can be a person, place or thing where we feel safe.

One group went for a nature walk to see how wildlife finds refuge in their local habitat. They discovered bees, worms, spiders and birds.

Another class looked and discussed homes and created a class poem about what home was like.

Pupils in Phase 4 learned about Collum lune poems, which is a specific style of poetry where the poet writes 3 lines in a 3-word, 5-word, 3-word format. After brainstorming about what was refuge to them, students created their own Collum lune poems about refuge.  The pupils chose to write about things that made them feel good, calm, relaxed and safe; their interpretation of refuge.

Please enjoy the sample of work from our pupils.
