John Chilton School was pleased to offer a Level 1 Makaton Workshop for parents and carers on 25 – 26 April 2024. Eight parent and carers from across primary and secondary pupils attended the sessions.

Makaton is a language programme that supports babies, children and adults to communicate through speech, signs and symbols.

At John Chilton School, we use Makaton across the school, to help our pupils communicate and learn. Makaton is one of the tools we use as part of our multi-modal approach to support our pupils.

Participants were taught over 100 concepts, including: home, where, toilet, mummy, boy and pizza. Part of the training included background to the Makaton vocabulary and how to improve signing techniques.

Each family was provided with a training manual and a certificate was presented upon completion of the training modules.

The workshop was run by Amy Sarchet-Waller, one of our secondary teachers, who has been a licensed Makaton tutor since 2017.

We hope to provide more Makaton workshops in the future and will inform families when the next course is on offer.
