Peer Reading – July 2023

Following the success of our peer to peer reading session for World Book Day, in July, we ran another shared reading session across our two sites, Bengarth and Vernon Rise.

Our reading pupils were from all age levels, starting from Poppies going up to Phase 5 pupils. Pupils read to students in our youngest year group, Sunflowers, across to our Blue Pathway classes in Phase 4.

Pupils prepared by choosing a book at their reading level and practiced in their own classes before going to their assigned class. Pupils often had the opportunity to read to several different students in a class, gaining confidence and familiarity. Some pupils even elected to read their book to the whole class.

We find these sessions to be a fantastic way for our pupils to embrace reading for leisure as well as develop connections with other pupils and classes in the school.

We plan to have whole school reading opportunities regularly throughout the upcoming school year.

As the wise Dr Seuss once wrote, “The more you read, the more things you know, the more you learn, the more places you go.”
