This year’s Science Week theme, “Change and Adapt,” invited pupils and staff across John Chilton School to explore how the world around us evolves and how we respond to those changes.
We began by asking:
- How has the world changed for us?
- How has technology developed over time?
- What interesting things can we discover by doing scientific experiments?
Science encourages us to ask questions and search for answers through observation and testing. Through experimentation, we can understand, explore, investigate and create. It also helps us develop critical thinking skills and sparks curiosity about the “why” and “how” behind everyday things.
To kick-off Science Week, staff took part in a CPD session led by Miss Rajakulendran and Miss Hamilton, where they explored the theme with teachers in more depth. The session focused on the importance of diversity in science, highlighted inspiring scientists on social media, and gave teachers the opportunity to try out some experiments in groups.
Throughout the week, each class across the school carried out a science experiment tailored to their pathway and learning needs. Activities included:
🧈 Butter making
🧪 Elephant toothpaste
🐛 Observing caterpillar growth
🌊 Oil spill clean-up
🍿 Dancing popcorn
The pupils were thoroughly engaged, showed great participation, and most importantly – had fun while learning! Just take a look at the photos to see their excitement and enthusiasm in action.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s theme: “Curiosity: What’s your question?”
